Nvidia may be preparing to buy its way from the centre of AI hardware into one of the most important communities in open AI.

Reuters, citing The Information, reports that Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for about $12.9 billion. Other reports have described the talks as valuing Hugging Face at more than $13 billion. Nvidia and Hugging Face had not publicly confirmed the transaction at the time of writing, so this should still be treated carefully.

If completed, the deal would be one of Nvidia’s most consequential AI acquisitions. Hugging Face is not just another startup. It is the developer hub where researchers, companies and independent builders share models, datasets, demos and tooling. It has become part of the daily workflow for open-weight and open-source AI development.

That is why the reported acquisition is sensitive. Nvidia already dominates the hardware layer of AI through its GPUs, networking systems, software stack and cloud relationships. Buying Hugging Face would push it closer to the distribution layer where models are discovered, downloaded, fine-tuned and deployed.

For Nvidia, the strategic logic is strong. The company wants to remain central whether the AI future is closed, open, cloud-hosted or local. Hugging Face gives it a direct relationship with millions of developers and a front-row seat to the models and tools gaining momentum.

The timing also fits Nvidia’s latest earnings. After reporting $96.2 billion in Q2 FY27 revenue, Nvidia has more financial power and more incentive to secure the AI ecosystem around its chips. Hardware demand is still enormous, but software and developer gravity can make that demand harder for rivals to dislodge.

For Hugging Face, the question is independence. The platform has built trust because it is seen as a neutral home for open AI work across many companies, frameworks and hardware providers. If Nvidia owns it, developers will ask whether AMD, Intel, Google TPU and other ecosystems still get the same treatment.

That concern does not mean the deal would be bad. Nvidia could bring capital, infrastructure and enterprise credibility to Hugging Face. It could also help more open models run efficiently on Nvidia hardware, which is already where much of the AI world trains and deploys.

But open AI depends heavily on trust. If builders start to feel that Hugging Face is becoming a strategic extension of one chip company, some may move important work elsewhere. That is the balance Nvidia would have to manage.

The reported deal shows how high the stakes around open AI have become. The battle is no longer only about who builds the best frontier model. It is also about who owns the platforms where everyone else builds.
