OpenAI Reportedly Building GitHub Rival Despite Microsoft Ties

OpenAI is reportedly working on a new code-hosting platform that could rival Microsoft’s GitHub, according to a report citing a person familiar with the project.

The initiative, first reported by The Information and cited by Reuters, is still in the early stages of development and may take several months before a working version is ready.

Engineers at OpenAI are said to have begun exploring the idea after experiencing a rise in service disruptions affecting GitHub, which in some cases rendered the platform unavailable. The outages reportedly prompted internal discussions about building an alternative environment for code hosting and collaboration.

The proposed system would function as a repository hosting and collaboration platform, similar to GitHub, where developers can store, manage, and review code projects.

According to the report, employees involved in the project have also discussed the possibility of making the platform available to OpenAI’s customers, rather than limiting it to internal engineering teams.

If OpenAI eventually commercialises the product, it would represent a notable shift in the company’s strategy, placing it in direct competition with GitHub, a platform owned by Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s biggest investors and technology partners.

The potential GitHub alternative would also fit into OpenAI’s broader push to build tools for software developers.

The company already offers programming-focused AI systems such as Codex, which translates natural language prompts into working code and powers many AI coding tools used in development environments.

By combining code hosting, collaboration features, and AI-driven coding assistance, OpenAI could create a more integrated platform for developers building AI applications.
