Apple has announced AirPods 5 at its September event, giving its mainstream earbuds a more serious audio and AI upgrade at a time when headphones are becoming another front in the personal assistant race.
The new earbuds bring active noise cancellation to Apple’s open-ear AirPods line, with redesigned acoustic architecture and improved adaptive noise control. Current live launch details say the AirPods 5 reduce noise by up to 50 percent more than the previous generation, while keeping the lighter open-ear fit that many users prefer over sealed ear tips.
Apple is also adding on-stem volume controls, a feature users have wanted for years on the standard AirPods line. That small hardware change matters because earbuds are used while walking, commuting, working out and taking calls. The less a user has to reach for the iPhone, the more useful the device becomes.
Battery life is listed at up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled, with a wireless charging case that supports Apple Watch and Qi chargers. The base AirPods 5 start at $129, while the version with the wireless charging case starts at $149. Preorders begin today, with availability expected from September 18.
The AI angle is live translation. Apple is positioning AirPods as a more natural interface for translated conversations, tying the earbuds into Apple Intelligence and the broader Siri AI push. That is important because AI assistants do not have to live only on phone screens. The ear may become one of the most natural places for real-time AI help.
The timing also fits Apple’s wider event message. The company has already unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max with a bigger Apple Intelligence focus. AirPods 5 extend that strategy from the phone to the body, where voice, hearing, calls and translation all become daily AI use cases.
Apple is streaming the event through its official events page, while the company’s Newsroom is expected to carry fuller product materials as the launch pages update. TechBooky will update details if Apple posts additional regional pricing or availability information.
The bigger business question is whether Apple can make AirPods feel like an AI accessory without making them feel complicated. The company has usually won wearables by making technology disappear into ordinary habits. If live translation works smoothly, AirPods 5 may become more than better earbuds. They may become one of Apple’s simplest answers to the AI assistant race.
