ChatGPT’s Mac app can now work with Apple Messages, and that small-sounding update carries a much bigger privacy and platform story.

9to5Mac reported that the latest ChatGPT update adds an Apple Messages plugin on Mac. The integration lets ChatGPT read and search conversations, summarize threads, draft replies and prepare messages for sending through Apple’s Messages app.

MacRumors also notes that the feature works with iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations on Mac. Users have to grant permissions, including access to Contacts and system automation, and reports say outgoing messages require approval by default.

The convenience case is obvious. A user can ask ChatGPT to find a past conversation, summarize a long thread, draft a polite reply, or help coordinate plans without manually scrolling through Messages. For people who handle a lot of personal and work communication on Mac, that could be genuinely useful.

The privacy case is just as obvious. Messages contain sensitive information: family conversations, passwords people should not send but often do, personal plans, business details, health discussions and financial context. Giving an AI assistant access to that content requires trust in the app, the permission system and the user’s own judgment.

OpenAI is presenting the feature as a Mac integration that runs with user permission rather than a hidden background scanner. Still, the practical risk is that users often grant broad permissions to make a feature work and only later think through what those permissions expose.

This also puts pressure on Apple. The company has historically treated Messages as a tightly controlled part of its ecosystem. If ChatGPT can now search, read and help send messages on Mac, it begins to do some of the assistant work users expected Siri to handle better.

That competitive angle matters because Apple and OpenAI are already linked in complicated ways. Apple has brought ChatGPT into parts of Apple Intelligence, while also facing questions about how its own Siri roadmap compares with faster-moving AI assistants. We have also looked at the wider Apple and OpenAI hardware and AI race, where cooperation and competition can sit uncomfortably close together.

For users, the practical advice is simple. Use the feature only if the convenience is worth the access, keep approval enabled for outgoing messages, and review permissions if the integration is no longer needed. AI assistants become more useful as they see more context, but that context is often the most private part of the user’s digital life.

The update shows where AI assistants are going. They are moving from standalone chat windows into messaging, files, calendars, browsers and work apps. The winner may be the assistant that can safely act across those spaces without making users feel they have surrendered control.
