
OpenAI’s clearest product bet right now is that agentic AI should not remain a developer tool. ChatGPT Work is the attempt to bring that same idea into the office.
In its official launch page, OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as an agent in ChatGPT that can take action across apps and files, stay with a project for hours and turn a goal into finished work. That includes documents, spreadsheets, slides, research, workflows and web apps.
A fresh interview with OpenAI’s product leadership gives the strategy more context. The company sees ChatGPT Work as a way to take the power of coding agents, which technical users already understand through tools like Codex, and package it for people who may never write code but still do complex digital work every day.
That is a major product shift. The first phase of generative AI was about answers. The second phase is about work. Instead of asking an assistant to draft a paragraph, users increasingly want an agent to gather context, check documents, update a spreadsheet, prepare a deck and keep going while they review the result.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Work has Codex technology built in, and that more than 5 million people use Codex weekly. The more important number may be that more than 1 million people now use Codex outside software development. That suggests the behavior is already spreading from engineers into marketing, finance, legal, sales and operations.
This explains why workplace AI is becoming so competitive. Microsoft wants Copilot to own the productivity layer. Google wants Gemini inside Workspace and Android. Anthropic is pushing computer-use and enterprise tools. Meta is reportedly preparing Hatch. The prize is not simply chatbot usage; it is the daily workflow relationship.
There are still hard questions. Giving an AI agent access to apps, files, email, messages and browsers creates privacy and security risk, which is why features like ChatGPT working with Apple Messages on Mac deserve close attention beyond the convenience story. OpenAI says organizations will have controls over access, plugins, approvals, compliance visibility and sensitive actions. Those controls will matter because businesses will not hand agents real work without governance.
The cost question also matters. Agents use more compute than simple chat because they reason, browse, call tools, revise outputs and keep tasks running. OpenAI has been cutting model prices and widening access, but the economics of long-running office agents will still be tested as adoption grows.
For workers, the impact will be uneven. Some people will use agents to clear low-value admin work and move faster. Others may find that the same tools reduce demand for routine analysis, reporting and coordination. That is why ChatGPT Work is not just another OpenAI feature. It is a preview of how white-collar work may be reorganized.
The key question is whether users will trust an AI agent enough to delegate real responsibility. If OpenAI gets that right, ChatGPT Work could become the bridge between today’s chatbot habit and tomorrow’s autonomous workplace software.
