
India is putting its semiconductor ambitions before global investors as Prime Minister Narendra Modi opens SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
The three-day event brings chipmakers, equipment suppliers, governments and investors together as India tries to move from being a major technology market to becoming an important part of the physical chip supply chain.
India has committed roughly $30 billion across incentives, infrastructure and approved projects for fabrication, packaging, testing and design. The government says 12 projects have been approved under the first phase.
The country has deep chip-design talent, but most advanced manufacturing happens elsewhere. SEMICON India 2026 is built around capturing more value between design and finished silicon.
The geopolitical timing helps. Governments and companies want less dependence on a small number of East Asian manufacturing centres. India offers scale, engineering talent and a large electronics market.
But manufacturing rewards clusters, not isolated announcements. A fab needs reliable power and water, specialist chemicals, precision equipment, logistics, experienced workers and nearby customers. Those relationships take years.
India has seen delayed proposals before, so investors will judge this effort by operational milestones. Packaging and testing may deliver earlier wins because they require less capital than leading-edge fabrication.
The AI boom adds urgency. Demand for accelerators, memory, networking and power electronics is rising. India does not need to manufacture the most advanced GPU immediately to benefit; it can build positions around the wider AI hardware stack.
The strategy is credible because it combines a huge market, engineering capacity and public money. Whether India becomes a true semiconductor power will depend on execution after the conference lights are switched off.
The hardest part will be turning public incentives into a durable private ecosystem. Subsidies can attract an initial plant, but suppliers and customers stay only when costs, regulation and infrastructure remain predictable. India will also need to keep training technicians and production engineers, not only the designers for which it is already known.
There is room for a practical strategy. Mature-node chips used in cars, appliances, telecom equipment and industrial systems remain commercially important, while assembly, testing and packaging can create jobs and know-how before leading-edge fabs arrive. That route may be less glamorous than competing immediately with Taiwan or South Korea, but it could produce a healthier industry.
For investors, the question is no longer whether India wants a semiconductor sector. The money and political attention are visible. The real question is whether approvals can become working factories on schedule, and whether those factories can win repeat orders after incentives fade.
