Over the past two years, the film industry has seen an unexpected spike of growth. The global demand for streaming media and film content has soared in the wake of lockdowns, allowing both big and small film businesses to experience a welcomed resurgence. But it hasn’t been demand alone that prompted this renewed interest in film – technology has played a significant role in getting this industry back onto its feet.

As technology becomes more and more accessible, even filmmakers from small, independent organizations can tap into the market and produce compelling content that consumers enjoy. So how else has technology balanced the playing field for indie producers in 2022?

How Tech Empowers Indie Filmmakers

The international film and video market was last reported to reach $234.9 billion, projected to hit an incredible $318.2 billion by 2025. Evidently, the consumer appetite for quality films and cinema is unlikely to dissipate – but how can independent filmmakers keep up with the demand?

The answer is simple: technology. The rapidly growing accessibility of sophisticated technology allows smaller, more niche film production companies to stay in the game while still creating evocative and at times unconventional films. Filmmaking technology such as autonomous drones, dual camera VR, high-tech cameras, and 3D printing equipment that were once exclusively reserved for mega blockbuster companies are now far more accessible than before, giving indie filmmakers more legroom to work their magic on screen.

What Else Is Needed For Success In 2022?

Despite the conveniently growing accessibility of expensive filmmaking gear, indie companies will still need to work hard in order to get the recognition they deserve. There are five main stages of film production, spanning things like development, production, and distribution.

However, something which ties all of these film production stages together is logistics. In other words, logistic experts are indispensable in film production; what is more, an impeccable approach to planning and logistics will become even more important in 2022 than before, with many pandemic-related loopholes, regulations, and new transportation issues to work through. In today’s world, without proper logistics, a film hasn’t got a chance of getting off the ground.

The indie film industry has always needed to work harder for what’s often less ROI and less recognition than major productions do, but things are looking up. Times of change are often the perfect environment for trying out new ideas and pushing boundaries, which is exactly what indie filmmaking is about. Perhaps indie filmmakers can use this time of restructuring to gain momentum and find success more easily than before.
