Netflix App Integration with Apple TV Was Temporary Error

Many of us Apple TV users have just accomplished the seemingly impossible feat of connecting Netflix to the Apple TV app. Well, there’s good news and bad news. It’s actually bad news.

The Verge has now confirmed that Apple has “rolled back” the temporary feature that allowed users to install Netflix as a linked service using the Apple TV app. 

A representative for Netflix, MoMo Zhou, tells The Verge that the window this morning when Netflix showed up as a “participating” service on Apple TV, complete with temporary support for the watchlist and “continue watching” features, was a mistake and has already been removed. It’s unfortunate. They could feel the joy in our responses to the original story.

The Apple TV app integration which was unintentionally released and has already been removed and have realized that Netflix’s decision to finally work with the Apple TV app was too good to be true given the course of 2025 thus far. The streaming giant and platform has now verified that this is the case. Next is our original narrative.

This explains why the Apple TV app’s Netflix integration was so erratic for some of us yesterday. For instance, The writer was not able to see any Netflix films on the Continue Watching shelf, even though adding Netflix as a linked service on the Apple TV app. 

They were certain US users of Apple TV 4K who are being asked to link their Netflix accounts to the Apple TV app. This would appear to herald an end to the streaming service’s prolonged unwillingness to have its content pooled into third-party platforms. It also perplexed by the fact that certain Netflix series only showed a few of the seasons that were available, and that a “Add to Watchlist” option that was present on select Netflix titles in the Apple TV app later vanished. Squid Game and Stranger Things are two examples of Netflix originals which had few episodes and asides this users may want to add to their Apple TV app watchlist by linking their accounts. However these episodes can also be found in the Continue Watching section.

At first, the Netflix integration’s glitchiness in the Apple TV app appeared to be a sign of a delayed deployment, but it turns out that was wishful thinking. Shortly after noon ET on Friday, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg tweeted that after hearing that the Netflix integration was “probably some sort of bug,” “it would be odd for Netflix to finally give in here.” The Verge soon received confirmation from an Apple representative that the Netflix integration should never have been implemented in the first place. 

In addition to refusing to take part in similar initiatives by other businesses like Google, Netflix has never supported Apple’s attempts to compile content from many streaming platforms. Therefore, it was unexpected when it appeared that Netflix had abruptly altered its mind without providing any formal notice or press statement. As Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said that he had heard it was some kind of issue.

Although it isn’t yet visible on Apple’s website, The Verge also has confirmed that Netflix is now included as a participating service in the Apple TV app alongside the previously approved applications. Only US-based customers have apparently been able to get the integration to operate, and the full Netflix catalog is still unavailable. It looks like the integration is still being rolled out. The update has not yet been announced by Apple or Netflix.

A standout feature of the Apple TV app is its ability to provide a unified watchlist from several streaming services, allowing users to continue watching where they left off and stay up to date on the newest material. However, Netflix has always rejected these attempts at convenience, not only from Apple but also from Google TV.

Regretfully, Netflix’s position on all of this has not changed, at least not yet. The firm is nonetheless adamant that users explore and watch its material using the Netflix app. Perhaps there is still a chance that Netflix will reconsider, but that time is not now. I guess at least we now know how simple it might be.

For as long as they have been rival streaming services, Apple and Netflix have disagreed on this. Due to the fact that “we prefer to have our customers watch our content in our service,” Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings stated in 2018 that the firm will not connect with the Apple TV platform. Before Apple loosened its regulations enabling developers to link directly to their own sign-up websites outside of the App Store, Netflix was one of the businesses that circumvented in-app subscriptions to avoid paying Apple’s fees.

A feature that Apple TV customers have long coveted is Netflix in the Apple TV app. All of the other major streaming services, such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Max, and Peacock, are currently integrated into the Apple TV app. You may search for and add videos from such providers to your Apple TV watchlist after connecting to the Apple TV app. With their most recent playback states synchronized, recently seen videos can also be seen on the Continue Watching shelf on the Apple TV home screen.

However, the absence of Netflix functionality limits the Apple TV app’s ability to search globally. Of course, if you don’t have a Netflix subscription, that won’t be an issue. But it’s a nuisance if you do.
