Snapchat’s ‘AI Clips’ Lens Transforms Photos Into 5‑Second Videos

Snapchat has introduced AI Clips, a new Lens format that uses generative AI to turn a single static photo into a five-second film. The launch of AI Clips in Lens Studio, Snapchat’s platform that enables artists to create and share AR and AI effects dubbed Lenses, was announced on Tuesday. A single shot may be converted into a five-second video using the new Clips, an AI-powered Lens format.

In contrast to open-ended text-to-video solutions, AI Clips are intended to be a closed-prompt experience in which users can tap the Lens producers to create a video from their own photographs.

A Lens developer might, for instance, create a Lens that lets users use their own photo to create a movie of themselves going down a red carpet.

Snapchat claims that both novice and seasoned developers may use the new Lens format to create a published Lens in a matter of minutes from a single prompt without the need for additional tools.

Users who have a subscription to Snapchat’s Lens+ service, which costs $8.99 a month, can access AI Clips. As the name implies, Lens+ offers users access to both the capabilities included in the regular Snapchat+ membership and special Lenses and AR experiences.

In a blog post, Snapchat stated that “developers can build and publish photo-to-video AI directly to Snapchat for the first time from the GenAI Suite in Lens Studio.” “As of right now, nothing else on the market combines direct photo input, real distribution, and monetization with closed-prompt AI video generation.”

Lens producers who participate in Snapchat’s monetization initiative, Lens+ Payouts, can make money from the AI Clips they produce.

YouTube revealed last week that it was launching “Reimagine,” a new feature that allows users to turn a single frame from a current YouTube Short into an 8-second film using their own photo, so Snapchat isn’t the only site concentrating on allowing users to make AI snippets from their own photographs.

The release of AI Clips coincides with Snapchat’s announcement that in 2025, users produced around two trillion Snaps, or 63,000 Snaps every second.

Unlike open-ended AI tools, AI Clips rely on a closed-prompt system: developers define specific styles and motions in Lens Studio, while users just select a Lens, pick a photo, and tap to generate a shareable animated clip in minutes.

The feature is exclusive to Lens+ subscribers ($8.99/month) and sits within Lens Studio’s GenAI Suite, allowing both novice and experienced developers to publish Lenses directly to Snapchat.

Key creator features include native video generation within Lens Studio, monetization opportunities for enrolled developers, and prompt guidelines recommending medium-length descriptions (approximately 40 words) that cover setup, main action, and camera movements like zoom, pan, or dolly.
