Weglot, a French startup building translation solutions for websites, has raised $50 million (€45 million) in its Series A financing round from Partech. The startup plans to scale its translation solution for websites with this funding.

Here’s what Weglot’s solution does… It helps websites to add more languages to their sites without having to get anyone to rewrite the content into a new language, without any tweaking and without having to use a different CMS or platform.

This is exactly what helps the startup stands out! Although translation plugins are not exactly new – there are translation plugins for WordPress of Shopify for example – Weglot wants to offer a product that works for every and any website. It basically wants to provide a universal product that is useful for all types of web experiences.

Weglot can be used in two ways. The first is adding it to an existing website as a plugin. This is how Weglot can be used on platforms such as WordPress, Shopify, WooComerce and Wix. This is very practical for small companies that either do not have a committed web developer or are trying to save cost. These small brands and companies do not need any sort of code to use Weglot’s solution.

The second method entails adding a few lines of Javascript to the <head> tag of your website. This method is used for Webflow, Squarespace and BigCommerce and there is the need to tweak DNS records to create subdomains or subdirectories for new languages. On Weglot’s servers, the company automatically detects and pulls content from the site. Weglot customers can use automatic translation to get started with new languages.

Weglot also provides a dashboard that allows users to input their content and create better translations. Translations can be managed from this dashboard and access can be granted to professional translators to make changes.

Once all these have successfully been set up, the website can now claim multilingual status. Once a website with Weglot’s solution is visited, the websites will automatically appear in the visitor’s favourite language. A language switcher can also be added to the website to allow users to switch between languages.

Weglot creates dedicated subdirectories or subdomains for each language albeit translations are stored on Weglot’s servers. Search engines such as Google can index each language variant of such a website. Metadata and keywords can also be translated with Weglot.

Weglot’s solution is accessible via a monthly subscription and the fee is dependent on the number of languages and words needed on a website.
