Impressive Fourth Quarter Performance for Amazon’s Public Cloud Service in 2016

Amazon recently released its financial report for the fourth quarter of 2016, a disclosure eagerly anticipated by many stakeholders. Of particular interest was the performance of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s public cloud service division, due to its strong showing in the previous quarter. The financial results proved that AWS indeed had an outstanding fourth quarter, helping Amazon uphold its commanding position in the public cloud market.

The eCommerce titan reported that AWS generated a robust $926 million in income on a revenue of $3.35 billion, reflecting a 47 percent increase year-over-year. These figures illustrate an impressive and consistent growth trajectory for AWS. The revenue for the third quarter of 2016 was estimated at $3.23 billion, which surpassed the analysts’ expectations. To put these numbers in perspective, in comparison to the $2.88 billion revenue reported in the second quarter of 2016, it is clear that this division of Amazon continues to surge forward.

However, a large portion of this revenue was absorbed by operating expenses, considering the company reported $2.43 billion in expenses associated with its public cloud services division. Such figures are not entirely unexpected, given the stiff competition posed by other prominent players in the market, such as Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. To remain competitive and to continue their growth trajectory, AWS, like other cloud service providers, has adopted a strategy of price cuts aimed at encouraging more users to try out the service.

While this pricing strategy has worked well to bolster the user base of Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, it’s clear that Amazon still reigns supreme in the public cloud space, maintaining a sizable lead over its primary competitors. This leader status is a testament to Amazon’s focus on innovation and customer service, as well as its pioneering role in the industry.

Amazon’s cloud services division has indeed ended the year on a high note, with an optimistic outlook for 2021. As the importance of cloud technology continues to rise amid digital transformation efforts, one can only expect Amazon to further expand and solidify its dominance in the public cloud arena.
