Google Maps Adds Gemini With Interactive Place Discussions

There may soon be a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature in Google Maps that will allow users to discuss routes and destinations. Google is reportedly developing a feature called “Ask Maps”, which would give the platform a chat interface like Gemini. After releasing hands-free voice-based AI navigation aid for many modes, this would further incorporate Maps as one of the company’s AI ecosystem products, if it’s real. The idea is still the same with Ask Maps, but users are reportedly able to ask questions about anything pertaining to the platform through a text interface.

The feature “Ask Maps”, which is already in the works, is a new Gemini-powered feature for Google Maps and is aimed at transforming the app into a conversational assistant.

The tech giant is reportedly working on a new AI function, according to a report from the Android Authority. The newspaper discovered it while dissecting the Google Maps v26.07.01.867227976 Android application package (APK). It goes without saying that nobody, not even the beta testers, can use the feature at this time.

When the feature is made available, a new chip is said to be seen beneath the text box on Google Maps. The report shared screenshots showing the chip’s Gemini glitter logo and the words “Ask Maps”. When you tap the chip, a bottom sheet with a text box and a Gemini-like interface appears. The chatbot is probably able to respond to users’ typed questions or discussion topics.

In order to properly respond to the app-specific questions, Google may closely connect the AI model that powers the chatbot with the Maps database.

Although the chatbot’s exact capabilities are yet unknown, it seems that customers may be able to ask enquiries concerning listings, routes, places, and anything else that users can manually search for on the platform.

The experience will first be accessible as an experimental feature that can be enabled via Settings, according to the publication. A new menu item called “Try new features” is mentioned in the report. It reads, “Get a first look at new features as they roll out.” This option must be used to activate Ask Maps during the APK breakdown process.

The magazine also discovered a banner that reads, “Spots are full right now, but more are opening soon,” inside the code excerpt. Return later. This suggests that the business may initially only make the service available to a limited number of users.

Please take note that the information above came from a reported APK deconstruction, and occasionally planned features are dropped before they are released to the public. Sometimes, even the released characteristics deviate greatly from the original avatar. Therefore, it is advised to be sceptical of the information regarding Ask Maps and to hold off until Google makes an official announcement.

Recent reports and app analysis indicate that the feature will consist of:

Conversational Interface: Next to the search box, there will be an “Ask Maps” option. By doing this, a chat window will open where users can speak naturally rather than using keywords.

“Find least traffic and no tolls” or “quiet cafes with good vibes for a first date” are examples of deep contextual queries that users might pose.

Follow-up Memory: By remembering past queries, the AI enables multi-step planning without having to start from scratch.

Experimental Access: With the use of a new “Try new features” area in the Google Maps settings, Google is testing this with a limited number of people.

Hands-Free Integration: This enhances Gemini’s already-existing functions, like voice-activated hands-free cycling and walking guidance.

There is presently no official release date for the function, and it is only available to a select few users in restricted trials.
