Since smartphones became a thing, millions of users all over the globe have found some sort of connection with their mobile devices one way or the other. These users through the use of Apps are able to spend time in front of their screens, unable to get enough digital content. According to consulting company Apptopia, we present to you the most downloaded apps globally in the year 2021.

Apptopia has compiled a single list of the most downloaded applications for Android and iOS. The most downloaded mobile app in the world is TikTok.  Quite predictably the Chinese app takes the first place, others apps that have made it into the top ten include Facebook, Snapchat and Spotify that have already become traditional leaders. A shocking fact is that amongst the top ten lines of the rating four are occupied by programs belonging to Facebook now rebranded as Meta. The newcomer to this list is CapCut, a video editing program. CapCut is an application that belongs to the company ByteDance, the same company that owns TikTok – the tool is optimized specifically for this application. Aside from Meta who has multiple application entries in the top ten is also ByteDance.

In the ranking which involves only the United States, the stats are quite different. Although TikTok retained its leading position on the list, meanwhile Apps like Spotify and Telegram failed at making it into the American top ten list. However, you’ll find out that YouTube, HBO Max and Cash App made the list. This ultimately shows that Apps like Spotify, Telegram and their likes are not as accepted as others.

In Cloudflare’s rating of the most popular Internet resources published earlier for 2021. It revealed that 2021 marked the shift of the permanent leader on the ranking which is the Google.com domain, which includes many of the services offered by the search giant. The new leader for 2021 is TikTok.com, which ranked only seventh last year. While Google was at number 1 last year, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft followed closely but this year TikTok overtakes them all earning the top spot of the most popular domain in 2021. Whatsapp didn’t make it to the list last year but made it this year displacing sister app Instagram, which make it last year but failed to do so again this year.

Insider Intelligence (formerly known as eMarketer) has also reported that TikTok surpassed Snapchat and Twitter in global user numbers, but the social media platform is well behind Facebook and Instagram. In other words, TikTok earned the position as the third-largest social media platform worldwide. In 2020, TikTok global users grew by 59.8% and an additional 40.8% in 2021. Further, Insider Intelligence estimates that TikTok will see a 15.1% growth in global users in the year 2022. Should that estimate hold true, TikTok will hold about 20% share of overall social media users by the end of 2022. With all this said, 2022 is right by the corner, if TikTok isn’t part of your social media marketing strategy for 2022 you are a suspect as these numbers definitely present a good case for making it a priority.

The ten most popular domains in 2021 are as follows:

  1. TikTok.com
  2. Google.com
  3. Facebook.com
  4. Microsoft.com
  5. Apple.com
  6. Amazon.com
  7. Netflix.com
  8. Youtube.com
  9. Twitter.com
  10. Whatsapp.com

Last year, the balance of power was as follows:

  1. Google.com
  2. Facebook.com
  3. Microsoft.com
  4. Apple.com
  5. Netflix.com
  6. Amazon.com
  7. TikTok.com
  8. Youtube.com
  9. Instagram.com
  10. Twitter.com
