Apple is reportedly preparing a new wave of AI-powered photo features for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, expanding its Apple Intelligence strategy beyond a smarter Siri and deeper app integrations.
According to Bloomberg, the upcoming software releases are expected to focus on bug fixes, performance improvements and broader Apple Intelligence capabilities. Part of that push will be a set of new photo editing tools designed to adjust backgrounds, framing and overall image quality directly in the Photos app.
Today, Apple’s Photos app already offers a mix of manual and AI-assisted edits, including adjustments to saturation and contrast, filters, cropping and the Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects. Bloomberg reports that Clean Up will become one of several branded “Apple Intelligence Tools” once the new updates land.
Based on the report, the Apple Intelligence Tools lineup will include:
- Clean Up – The existing AI feature that removes objects from photos, positioned as part of the broader Apple Intelligence suite.
- Extend – A new generative AI tool that can expand the background of an image beyond what was originally captured.
- Enhance – A one-tap style option to automatically improve elements such as lighting and overall image quality.
- Reframe – A perspective-shifting feature that lets users adjust the framing of a photo after it has been taken, with Bloomberg noting it is aimed primarily at Apple’s spatial photos.
If these tools arrive as reported, they would deepen Apple’s use of generative AI inside core system apps, making it easier for users to rescue awkward framing, fix poor lighting or subtly change a scene without leaving the built-in Photos experience.
The reported features would move Apple’s photo editing closer to what’s already available on rival platforms. Google and Samsung both lean heavily on AI in their camera and gallery apps, and have for some time.
Google’s Magic Editor, introduced in 2023, is highlighted in the report as still offering more freedom for radical changes, including significant additions and alterations to an image. By comparison, Apple’s reported approach with Extend, Enhance and Reframe appears to be more conservative, concentrating on expanding backgrounds, boosting quality and tweaking composition rather than generating entirely new scenes.
Even with that narrower focus, folding these tools into Apple Intelligence would mark a meaningful evolution of Apple’s built-in photo software, especially for everyday users who prefer automatic fixes over manual sliders and pro-grade apps.
Beyond imaging, Bloomberg also reports that Apple is preparing a revamped version of Siri powered by Google’s Gemini models, standalone Siri app and AI-powered search features inside Apple’s own apps.
Apple is expected to outline many of these AI-related additions including the reported photo capabilities during its WWDC keynote on June 8.
