TikTok Rolls Out Ad-Free Subscription Plan In UK

In the United Kingdom, TikTok is launching by introducing an ad-free membership service that costs £3.99 (about $5.44) per month. Users who are at least 18 years old will be allowed to access the new service, which will be released over the next coming months. Ads won’t appear on TikTok for users who join up for the subscription, and their information will not be used for advertising purposes.

This was announced earlier today. It allows adult users to completely remove platform-delivered advertisements.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the United Kingdom, which forbids businesses from gathering users’ personal data for advertising purposes without their agreement, was probably the driving force for the introduction.

In a news statement, Kris Boger, TikTok’s UK managing director, had stated that  the choice for our community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on TikTok. He went further to claim that while its new ad-free option gives people more control over their experience, advertising on its platform already helps thousands of British businesses reach new customers, increase sales, and also create jobs.

The ad-free plan was initially tested by TikTok in 2023. Whether the social media giants intend to launch the product in the United States is uncertain.

There are also free account holders who will now see personalized ads by default, as the option to use the platform entirely free without data targeting has been removed. Core features, effects, and creator content, however, remain identical across both free and paid tier subscriptions.

This change, which aligns with the “consent or pay” model previously used by Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Snapchat, is motivated by legal obligations, particularly the GDPR and UK data legislation governing user profiling permission. In the upcoming months, eligible users will receive in-app pop-up reminders to sign up; however, the company has not yet announced an ad-free service release for the US or other areas, nor has it confirmed any expansion growth.
