E-commerce giant Amazon is set to expand into new territories including Nigeria. According to a recently published Business Insider report which cited leaked business documents, Amazon plans to launch in five countries across Africa, Europe, and South America and these countries are namely Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and South Africa.

The American e-commerce player is set to launch in Nigeria in April 2023 and when it does, it will be taking on key industry players Jumia and Konga which have established a name and brand for themselves in the country. Amazon’s entrance into these new territories will result in more competition for local e-commerce companies. Amazon is a global brand and is armed with all the resources it will need to scale its operations.

Headquartered in the US and currently available in 20 countries across the globe, the new development is geared towards investing in long-term growth while the company scales up its outlets based in the US.

According to the Business Insider report, rollouts to the aforementioned countries are expected to take place between 2022 and 2023. The launch into these different countries has been categorized under different project names, the report said. The launch into Belgium is called Project Red Devil and is slated for September 2022. That of Colombia is termed Project Salsa and is to take place by February next year. Chile’s launch is planned for April of 2023 and shares the same project name as Colombia. Project Fela which is the project name for the Nigeria and South Africa launch is expected to take place in April 2023 and February 2023 respectively.

According to the Business Insider report, “All countries are planning to launch with their own marketplace and access to Amazon’s fulfillment service called Fulfillment by Amazon, one of the documents said.”

Amazon’s launch in Nigeria would be a different ball game as it will create a totally different e-commerce space in terms of competition.
