In a determined move against deceiving content, social media behemoth Facebook is adjusting its algorithm to combat clickbait within its News Feed. This announcement made in a recent [post](http://newsroom.fb.com/news/2016/08/news-feed-fyi-further-reducing-clickbait-in-feed/) by Facebook highlights a growing need to safeguard the integrity of online content.
For those unfamiliar, clickbait refers to the intentional misrepresentation of headlines by certain online outlets. These ambiguous or exaggerated titles, while seemingly harmless, are designed to generate click-throughs and drive up website traffic. The actual content, once accessed, often fails to live up to the baited anticipation set by its misleading headline. Seasoned internet users will most likely have encountered this rooted issue at one point or another.
Facebook detailed their approach towards resolving this pressing problem in an excerpt from the same post:
_”Our efforts are majorly focused on addressing this issue, and we are making significant alterations to the News Feed using a system that identifies commonly used phrases in clickbait headlines. Our methodology involved categorizing tens of thousands of headlines as clickbait by evaluating two pivotal factors: (1) if the headline withholds pertinent information, thereby preventing the reader from understanding the content of the article; and (2) if the headline exaggerates the article’s content to a degree that fosters misleading expectations for the reader. For instance, a headline reading “You’ll Never Believe Who Tripped and Fell on the Red Carpet…” withholds crucial information about the event (What exactly happened? Who was it who tripped?). Another headline, “Apples Are Actually Bad For You?!” misleads the reader (apples are only detrimental to your health if excessively consumed). A dedicated team at Facebook scrutinized thousands of headlines using these criteria, corroborating each other’s assessments to pinpoint a large number of clickbait headlines.”_
In response to concerns centered around the new initiative, Facebook assured that pages that do not indulge in creating dishonest headlines have nothing to worry about. Conversely, those found to be engaging in these practices could face a noticeable decrease in their distribution.
Facebook’s decision makes a strong statement against clickbait culture, redefining standards for content shared on its platform. As an attempt to enhance the user experience, the planned adjustments signal a step towards the social network becoming a more trustworthy source of information.
As the evolving digital landscape continues to face challenges, Facebook’s actions remind us of the importance of maintaining the integrity of online content.
