Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, is getting a new function. On Wednesday, it was revealed that Gemini could now access GitHub repositories and carry out a number of coding tasks. These consist of creating and altering functions, providing code explanations, responding to inquiries regarding the codebase, debugging code, and more. At the moment, only the platform’s premium subscribers can access the feature. The software giant with headquarters in Mountain View made a noteworthy announcement: it will now extend Gemini to additional devices, such as smart TVs, smart watches, auto infotainment systems, and more.
The Gemini app’s official handle revealed the new function in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Gemini Advanced is now a more powerful coding assistant as it connects with GitHub,” the post said. The new capability should be available to users of the most recent versions of the web client or mobile app. Notably, only Gemini Advanced subscribers get access to this function.
Although the functionality does not improve the chatbot’s coding skills, it does personalize its use case. Now, users may ask Gemini questions about their repositories or request that it debug the codes by linking the AI to them.
According to Google, this new feature will enable Gemini to create and alter code and functions, analyse and interpret code, respond to inquiries, troubleshoot, and more. Gemini was able to analyse the code in one sample and provide suggestions for improving its efficiency.
Gemini Advanced users can choose the “import code” option by tapping the plus symbol (+) on the left side of the text field. After finishing, they can put the GitHub URL into another text field. The AI is compatible with both public and private repositories. Notably, the monthly cost of the Gemini Advanced subscription in India is Rs. 1,950 which is about 22.78 USD.
The IT giant revealed earlier this week that Gemini would now be available on more Android smartphones. Gemini will be incorporated into smartwatches, smart TVs, in-car entertainment systems, and potentially smart glasses and headsets in the upcoming months, according to Google.
Be advised that AI models, such as Google’s, still have difficulty writing high-quality software. Due to flaws in areas like comprehension of programming logic, code-generating AI frequently introduces errors and security vulnerabilities. Devin, a well-known AI coding tool, was only able to finish three of twenty programming exercises, according to a recent study.
Only a few days have passed since OpenAI released a GitHub connector for ChatGPT deep research, a program that gathers comprehensive study papers on a subject by searching the web and other sources. Google and OpenAI are among the AI businesses that are rushing to release new features in an attempt to differentiate their products in a competitive market.
As an example, OpenAI added Microsoft OneDrive and SharePoint connectors to ChatGPT deep research on Tuesday.
