Gemini AI to Replace Google Assistant on Android

In order to shift more people to its AI-powered Gemini assistant, Google has revealed intentions to gradually remove Google Assistant from Android handsets. This  means that users of Android smartphones will now be able to access Google’s virtual assistant through Gemini. The internet giant said on Friday that it is gradually discontinuing Google helper in favour of Gemini, an AI helper. The business said in a blog post that the traditional Google Assistant would no longer be available for download via app stores or on the majority of mobile devices later this year. The business also stated that additional devices would be switched to Gemini as the only assistant from Google throughout the course of the upcoming months. In addition, the tech giant intends to replace Assistant with Gemini for tablets, Android Auto, and gadgets that link to smartphones, such as earbuds and headphones.

Users of Android smartphones have had access to the Gemini AI assistant for some time. Users with compatible devices could use the chatbot’s expanded features and select it as their preferred virtual assistant. On the other hand, customers had the option to stick with Google Assistant if they wanted the more traditional assistant experience.

Google will upgrade more Android users from Assistant to Gemini as part of this change. However, Assistant functionality will not alter for devices that do not currently satisfy Gemini’s minimal system requirements. Since Gemini needs Android 10 or later, Google Assistant could still work on devices running Android 9 or earlier.

However, the business is taking away that option coming forward, and customers will only have Gemini as the default virtual assistant on Android devices. Naturally, they also have the option to use any third-party virtual assistant.

Brian Marquardt, Senior Director, Product Management, Gemini app at Google, said in a blog post that the company is now upgrading Android smartphone users to Gemini. He pointed out that Google Assistant was introduced in 2016 to provide voice-based interaction to users, but that the company is now reimagining the experience with “AI at its core” to offer a more personalized assistant.

In the upcoming months, the business plans to upgrade additional mobile customers from Google Assistant to Gemini. The tech behemoth plans to disable the legacy assistant on the majority of devices later this year, and app stores will no longer provide the assistant for download. It’s probable that the virtual assistant will only be used on smartphones without AI capabilities.

The similar strategy is being planned by Google for its whole ecosystem. Tablets, Android Auto-enabled devices, and gadgets that link to smartphones, such watches and headphones, will also be upgraded to Gemini, according to Marquardt. Smart TVs, speakers, and displays running Android are also getting a new Gemini experience driven by AI. In the upcoming months, further information on the transfer will be released.

Gemini, which debuted last year, had AI-powered features including multimodal capability, text summarization, and picture production. However, key essential Assistant features were absent from its original release. Since then, Google has filled in these gaps by introducing support for things like

  • Configuring and controlling timers and alarms
  • Managing the brightness of the display, volume, and flashlight
  • Taking pictures and screenshots
  • Controlling the playing of media
  • Opening particular settings, webpages, or applications

Gemini also provides ‘Gemini Live,’ an interface for more organic speech interactions, and connects with third-party apps like Spotify and WhatsApp.

Even with these advancements, there are still certain restrictions. ‘Routines,’ a crucial Google Assistant automation feature, is not yet completely supported by Gemini. But it said that it is “continuing to focus on improving the quality of the day-to-day Gemini experience, especially for those who have come to rely on Google Assistant.”

Google intends to extend Gemini beyond smartphones to include tablets, automobiles, and networked gadgets like smartwatches and headphones. Additionally, the business revealed that Gemini-powered experiences would soon be available on TVs, smart speakers, and screens. Google said that more information would be made public in the upcoming months, but no specifics have been disclosed. Google Assistant will keep working on these devices till then.
