At an invite-only creator event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Meta gave a sneak peek at planned updates to its video-editing software Edits, showcasing features like a new AI assistant and a desktop version of the formerly mobile-only program.

The business also said that further new features, such as a “Beta” button for experiments and enhanced audience insights, will be available in the app today.

Last year, Edits made its debut as a direct rival to ByteDance’s CapCut. Meta hopes to draw in new users as well as keep existing ones with the addition of the new and future technologies.

The future AI assistant will assist content producers in analyzing their observations and coming up with ideas. Users’ Instagram data, such as views and video-retention insights, will be used by the assistant to help them understand what is effective and why. Based on performance, it will recommend ideas for videos and recommend creating content using popular music.

As it continues to compete with TikTok and YouTube for creators’ attention, Meta hopes to keep creators interested on Instagram by incorporating an AI assistant straight into Edits. Additionally, Meta encourages more frequent posting by providing producers with fresh suggestions, which may increase user engagement. Additionally, having direct access to an AI assistant eliminates the need for content creators to rely on third-party technologies like ChatGPT for performance analysis and content idea generation.

Last week, Meta introduced a similar AI assistant for Facebook developers. It’s important to remember that TikTok and YouTube provide producers with tools to help them generate ideas. For example, TikTok provides producers with an AI assistant that can generate ideas and identify trends, while YouTube Studio has an Inspiration tab that employs AI to assist artists in coming up with video ideas.

The desktop edition of Edits will allow authors to work on a larger screen and have more exact control over the editing process, both of which can be useful for more complex editing workflows. Creators will be able to easily synchronize their processes between desktop and mobile platforms, according to the business.

Edits will be able to more effectively compete with CapCut, which already has a desktop version, thanks to the planned desktop version.

Meta’s new built-in AI assistant works and serves as a data-driven editing partner, helping creators analyze Instagram performance and generate personalized content ideas using trending audio and retention insights, and is currently being tested with select attendees from Meta’s Los Angeles event.

A Beta tab, which will give creators early access to experimental features that are still in development and let them give Meta feedback, is one of the new features that are being introduced today. By launching the Beta tab, Meta hopes to improve its competitiveness with CapCut and speed up feature development based on what artists genuinely desire and will use.

Additionally, creators will now be able to view additional specific analytics, such as the demographic breakdown of their audience and the peak engagement time of day. The app’s current analytics, which include information like how long viewers watch a video, how many followers a certain video gained, where users quit watching a particular video, and more, are supplemented by the new measures.

In the app’s Inspiration feed, producers may also search for particular topics to find reels and templates that other creators are creating based on a particular idea or trend. Additionally, they will be able to produce several iterations of a single piece of content in order to determine which works best before releasing.

Instagram claims that content created with the app has a 10% higher save rate and a 2% higher reshare rate than content not made on Edits and that more than half of Instagram viewers of reels see Edits-created content on a daily basis. However, the company did not disclose precise numbers regarding the number of users Edits has.

Android and iOS users can download Edits for free.

The desktop version of Edits is “coming soon,” according to Meta, while the AI helper that was revealed today is presently undergoing testing with participants of Thursday’s creative event. Today, the remaining features will be available to all users.

Meta’s Edits app rollout comes along with a desktop version and an AI assistant alongside new analytics features like a beta testing tab, richer audience insights, enhanced topic search, and content testing tools, all built on data showing that Edits-created content performs better on Instagram.
