Last month, Threads started testing Direct messages (DMs) also can be known to be Direct texting, in a few locations.

Direct messaging (DMs) features have been added to Meta’s Threads, enabling users to chat within the app without navigating to Instagram.

Direct messages (DMs) which is called are now available on Threads’ platform, enabling one-on-one conversations without ever leaving the app. Since Threads’ 2023 introduction, the feature has been a “top request” from users, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. It comes with a number of features, including as group messaging, inbox filtering, and messaging controls. Additionally, the Meta-owned microblogging site has included a function called Threads Highlighter to identify trending subjects.

In relations to DMing inidividuals, after Elon Musk’s takeover, Threads appeared as a rival microblogging platform to X (previously Twitter) in 2023, which lacked direct message functionality. But that is now changing. One-on-one messaging on Threads is now possible on the microblogging site, but there are restrictions, according to Meta’s blog post. This feature has been substantially expanded since the business started testing it last month.

Initially, mutuals from Instagram or Threads followers who are at least 18 years old can DM one other. They are kept safe by the safety measure, account protection procedures, and Meta’s privacy requirements. Message controls will be the first of the additional features the firm plans to add to the DMs feature in the near future.

This feature allows users to manage who can message them on the microblogging social network. They can receive DM requests in a different message requests folder and accept them from users who do not follow them on Instagram or Threads. Furthermore, group chatting will be accessible. According to Meta, this will enable several Threads users to participate in a discussion at once.

Direct texting is now available to everyone on Threads. Though Threads will only permit direct messages between your followers or mutual followers on Instagram to begin, you may now privately chat other users on the Meta-owned X rival.

As the name implies, the final feature is inbox features, which allow users to apply filters based on certain conditions on the inbox to locate the message they’re looking for.

To send a direct message on Threads, click the envelope symbol located in the toolbar at the bottom of the app’s screen. After that, you’ll be sent to your inbox, where you can begin writing a message by tapping the pencil button in the upper-right corner.

Users who are at least 18 years old can now utilize Threads’ direct messages on the web, iOS, and Android platforms, however at this time, you can only have one-on-one discussions. In the future, Threads intends to introduce the option to control who can message you, even those who are not your followers on Instagram and Threads. Similar to what is available on X, you will also be able to examine a folder devoted to message requests. Additionally, Threads is developing inbox filters and a group messaging function.

A new “highlighter” function that will draw attention to “unique perspectives that lead to thoughtful conversations” was unveiled by Threads alongside DMs. To identify popular subjects, you will currently only view highlighted content in areas of the app where you find new information, such as your For You feed. Threads intends to expand the app’s highlighter functionality in the near future.

Starting on July 2, 2025, the function will be accessible to users who are at least 18 years old worldwide, with the exception of those in Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

Emoji reactions, spam reporting, one-on-one chats, and mute settings are all included in the initial release.

Future versions will include more sophisticated features like inbox filters and group messaging.

The vice president of product at Threads acknowledged that the direct messages are not secured and are intended for community involvement rather than private chat.

By creating a “interest graph” that is different from Instagram’s social graph, the site aims to set itself apart from the social media giant.

Meta is testing methods, such as Facebook or standalone signups, to enable people to use Threads without an Instagram account.

Following limited DM tests in a few countries, Threads continues to offer new features and leads like Bluesky with 350 million monthly users.
