Microsoft Adds Office Companion Apps to Windows 11 Taskbar

Today Microsoft officially rolled out three new Microsoft 365 companion apps; People, File Search, and Calendar directly on the Windows 11 taskbar, offering business users instant access to key tools without opening full Office applications.

These companions were first teased at Ignite 2024 and have now transitioned from beta to general availability for Microsoft 365 Business customers. The People companion allows users to quickly search corporate contacts, browse org charts, and launch Teams chats or emails with a single click. File Search lets users surface files across OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook complete with previews, filters, and share options. The Calendar companion displays upcoming appointments and allows in-taskbar access to schedule management and meeting joins.

All three apps install automatically when Microsoft 365 is present; however, IT administrators retain control to disable installation, and users can opt out of automatic startup in settings.

Powered by the Microsoft Graph Microsoft’s unified connectivity fabric, the feature enhances workflow by reducing app switching. A Windows Central report highlighted that these mini-apps deliver “find files, contacts, and events without leaving your taskbar,” further streamlining productivity.

Microsoft’s launch of companion apps marks a significant shift in UI strategy, it’s transforming the taskbar into a lightweight productivity hub. For end-users, it means faster, task-focused interactions; for developers and admins, it introduces new integration and deployment considerations.

This aligns closely with broader moves toward “agentic companions” or AI-driven assistance on the taskbar. While still speculative, previews of features like AI agents hint at a future where the taskbar could serve as an intelligent assistant launcher.
