Oracle and OpenAI Reject Microsoft Data Centre Offer

Microsoft will lease a Texas data centre project originally developed for Oracle and OpenAI, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The Abilene site, offering around 700 megawatts of capacity, is adjacent to Oracle and OpenAI’s flagship Stargate campus.

Microsoft is leasing a 700-megawatt Texas data centre developed by Crusoe, located next to the Stargate campus. Oracle and OpenAI abandoned plans for the site amid financing and technical challenges. The move bolsters Microsoft’s AI infrastructure push, backed by $50 billion in recent leasing commitments. Meta had also shown interest.

According to the article, after Oracle and OpenAI withdrew from negotiations to occupy the site, Microsoft reached a deal with developer Crusoe.

However, a source with knowledge of the situation told Reuters that OpenAI’s current contracts with Oracle were unchanged.

A Microsoft representative stated that the company has nothing to disclose. Crusoe did not reply to a request for comment from Reuters, and Oracle declined to comment.

Bloomberg News had revealed earlier this month through a published article that following protracted negotiations over funding and OpenAI’s evolving requirements, Oracle and OpenAI had given up on plans to expand an AI data centre in Texas.

The accusations that anticipated capacity at the Abilene location is being delayed were later refuted by Oracle.

In order to run generative AI applications like ChatGPT and Copilot, which demand enormous amounts of processing power, tech companies have been investing billions of dollars in data centres.

This shift, according to the company, puts Microsoft and its competitor, Oracle, on the same enormous Abilene site. Though Oracle and OpenAI decided not to proceed with this particular 700 MW expansion, they still run a number of the Stargate site’s current structures for AI deployment and training purposes.
