Instant messaging application –WhatsApp Messenger is allegedly working on a ‘Community’ feature. The mobile application which was first released in February 2009 has over 2 billion users worldwide. The mobile application allows users to send text messages, voice notes, make voice and video calls, share images, documents, user locations, and other exciting friendly services. According to an APK teardown done by XDA developers, the instant message which recently suffered a worldwide outage may be working on a community feature.
According to Business Insider, the Community feature was seen in the newest beta version for WhatsApp, version 2.21.21.6. The online news source also says as per reports, the new feature may have some similarities with the groups feature but the code suggests that the said feature may not be the new name for Groups, but a separate feature. Speculations are still unsure what to make of this update. Some say that the alleged new feature could either co-exist with the already existing Group feature currently available on the messaging app or a rename of the Groups feature. However, we are reminded it is just an APK teardown and it may or may not be part of updates to expect from WhatsApp developers since it is yet to be tested and may even end up been removed completely.
Other speculations say that the Community feature could share similarities with Facebook Group. This may further mean that the Community may have the ability to host one or more groups within itself or who knows it may be the other way around. The Community feature may as well offer admins more control over groups and may provide users with a channel to share messages across the community. It could also offer more roles to users such as community managers, Editor, Contributor, and the list goes on.
The timeframe for the roll-out of this Community feature is unknown. All we have right now are speculations that may take much longer than we think for the instant messaging platform to bring out the suitable features that users would be grateful for. For now, there’s no certainty that the Community feature will be coming anytime. However we are keeping our fingers crossed on this one, we are staying on our toes to ensure we can share further details with you all as soon as we have them. We enjoin you to stick with us as we await these.
