Facebook Added A One-click Security Button To Hide Users Friends Lists Based In Afghanistan.

Facebook intervene in the Afghanistan crisis via its social media platform to promote safety by securing users’ accounts exclusive to Afghanis. Facebook’s head of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, shared a tweet about the new security policy Facebook is adopting.

Nathaniel added a new “one-click” button that immediately locks a user account — this feature is exclusively for users based in Afghanistan due to the ongoing crisis. Facebook’s head of security policy intends to tighten security for active users — with a hidden friend list and a private account, users can be less of a target by the Taliban

Since the Taliban chased the US government out of Afghanistan with a perfectly staged coup, several westerners were forced to flee Afghan communities to avoid violence. While the rest of the indigenous Afghani population remain scared of their lives.

Nathaniel Gleicher had to upgrade Facebook’s security system for its Afghani users which is not influenced to promote Facebook’s business scheme. He said several journalists, civil society leaders, and other groups of activists influenced Facebook’s feedback community agitating help for Afghan citizens.

The Taliban instigated crisis in Afghanistan, several social media platforms have reportedly blocked the Taliban’s account, including accounts that preach Taliban campaign. While the Taliban still have other social accounts and they have reportedly stalked their targets who campaign against them.

Other Afghani citizens have been monitored via their Facebook account and other social media platforms by the Taliban. This has resulted in other Facebook users being scared of their lives, whereby several users have purportedly deactivated their Facebook account.

Aside from deactivating their Facebook account, several Afghani’s have also deleted pictures from their phones and on their Facebook page that prove their social ties or allegiance with either the Afghanistan military, the previous western reign, or the previous Afghani government.

Per Nathaniel’s tweet, the newly tweaked one-click button is a simplified tool built for Afghani people to secure their lives which locks their Facebook accounts. At this time the crisis in Afghanistan is at its peak, the rate of violence will also increase as well, whereby the Taliban will commit more atrocities than expected.

For context, a locked account restricts other users who are not acquainted with the locked account from viewing their activities on Facebook, as well as viewing their friend’s list on social media.

Facebook’s head of security policy also noted a one-click button is an effective tool that also restricts unknown Facebook users from downloading documents from a locked Afghani Facebook profile.

As a means of protecting the Afghani Facebook community from being the Taliban’s next target, Nathaniel also had to disable the search for friends list when the one-click button is active — exclusive for users in Afghanistan. Nathaniel also mentioned that the same security measures will feature on its subsidiary social media, Instagram.

For Instagram users based in Afghanistan, Facebook is adding a pop message that alerts users to oblige to enabling countermeasures which are designed with a simplified step to secure their social lives on the web. Facebook also made an emergency center available — a real-time solution to counter the real-time threat.
