Tesla To Open First Manufacturing Facility In Europe On Tuesday

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla

On Tuesday, electric vehicle company Tesla will officially open its first manufacturing facility in Europe. The company is unleashing the new factory to relieve other production facilities located in the US and China of the continually increasing demand.

The new manufacturing facility called the new Giga Berlin plant is located in Grünheide, a coal town in Brandenburg, Germany, within commuting distance of the capital. To open the facility, CEO Elon Musk will cut a red ribbon at the plant, after which it will be officially open.

The company is projecting that the plant will be producing at least up to 500,000 vehicles every year, and this will support the company as it struggles to keep up with the increasing demand for its vehicles. There have been reports that the company had continuously delayed its Model Ys and Model 3s in various parts of the world where they have been demanded.

The announcement to open up its first facility in Europe follows the shutting down of production last week at its Shanghai plant as a result of resurging Covid-19 cases in the country. This alone impeded the production of Model 3 and Model Y for some time.

The decision to open up its Europe facility is a big win for Tesla as the company has been exporting cars from China to parts of Europe where they have been demanded. The demand for Tesla vehicles in Europe continues to rise and with a plant existing and functioning in the continent, this demand can be adequately met.

Tesla has been going on and on about opening its manufacturing plant in Germany which has been under development for several years. It wasn’t until 2019, that Elon Musk while lauding German engineering announced the plan to build the manufacturing plant in Germany shortly after the Gigafactory 3 plant in Shanghai was opened. “Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding, for sure. That’s part of the reason why we are locating our Gigafactory Europe in Germany. We are also going to create an engineering and design centre in Berlin because Berlin has some of the best art in the world,” he said.

Tesla received a conditional license to start production activities on the 4th of March.
