Accenture Acquires Downdetector & Speedtest In A $1.2b Deal

There will soon be a new owner for the free websites Downdetector and Speedtest, which let users easily monitor internet speeds or determine whether an online platform could be unavailable. Downdetector and Speedtest are two platforms that are owned by Ookla. Other assets also included in the deal are RootMetrics (mobile network performance) and Ekahau (Wi-Fi design/diagnostics), which are in addition to Speedtest and Downdetector.

As previously reported by a press agency, Accenture, a consultancy and IT services firm, revealed on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement to purchase the platforms owned by Ookla from Ziff Davis for $1.2 billion.

Accenture CEO Julie Sweet states in the press release that the company would use Ookla’s technologies to gather information that will let “clients across business and government scale AI safely.” In 2014, Ookla was purchased by Ziff Davis, the parent company of CNET, IGN, and Eurogamer.  Other products from Ookla include RootMetrics, a platform that gauges mobile network speeds, and Ekahau, software for network design and debugging.

Ookla’s data will be utilised to support cloud service providers and AI hyperscalers after the acquisition, which is still pending regulatory approval. However, Accenture informs Ars Technica that it will continue to manage the Ookla “business as it operates today.”

According to a statement from Ookla CEO Stephen Bye, “Joining Accenture will allow us to scale our premier network data business across the world’s largest enterprises and accelerate our goal of creating better connected experiences.”

Accenture’s strategic objective is to assist clients in optimising network infrastructure and enabling AI-driven transformations by integrating Ookla’s real-time data and predictive simulations.

Seller’s Shift, according to Ziff Davis, intends to focus on its vertical media businesses, such as IGN, Mashable, and Everyday Health, after the sale.

About 16% of Ziff Davis’s total income, or $231 million, was reported by the Connectivity segment for 2025.
