Google is bringing its Gemini AI assistant directly to the Mac desktop, launching a native macOS app a day after rolling out a Windows version.

The company describes the macOS release as a “native desktop experience” for Gemini, designed to be invoked instantly from anywhere in the system and to see what’s on your screen so it can help with whatever you’re working on.

Once installed, the Gemini app can be triggered by keyboard shortcuts. By default:

  • Option + Space opens a compact “mini chat” overlay.
  • Option + Shift + Space opens the full Gemini chat interface.

These shortcuts can be customised in the app’s settings.

The macOS app is built to work closely with what’s on your display. Users can share anything on their screen with Gemini, including files stored locally, and then ask questions about that content. That covers images, documents, data and code, as well as other on-screen material.

Beyond the visible screen, there’s also an option to share entire web pages with Gemini, not just what’s currently in view. That gives the assistant access to the full contents of a page for richer summarisation or analysis.

The Gemini Mac app supports image and video generation, tapping Google’s Nano Banana for images and Veo for video. That means users can both analyse existing content on their machines and create new visual and video assets from within the same desktop interface.

The app is available for Macs running macOS 15 (macOS Sequoia) or later, in all countries and languages where Gemini is already supported.

Michael Friedman, group product manager for the Gemini app, wrote in a Google blog post that the company is “building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant,” with more updates promised in the coming months.

The timing is notable: Apple is expected to finally unveil a generative AI overhaul of Siri at its WWDC developer conference in June, with deep integration into macOS apps. Apple’s revamped chatbot is slated to run on Gemini models, underscoring how central Google’s AI stack is becoming even on Apple’s own platforms.
